Along the back streets of Tonneins, a treasure trove of stunning old houses waiting to be renovated. Tonneins was the tobacco capital of France when tobacco barges would moor along its quays on the Garonne River. Many of us have old tobacco barns, sechoirs, on our property. When the tobacco industry in the town was closed down 15 years ago, 500 jobs were lost & its economy went into decline. Could be so so lovely...

Aren’t they! They grow all over their native South Africa – people stop noticing them – but I just love the flowers. I understand they are classified as an environmental weed in parts of Australia?

Gosh, hard to believe they could be that invasive.

They grow in pretty big clumps and, in the right conditions (heat and rain) spread quickly from underground rhizomes.

Sorry Christopher … only spring bulbs to look forward to in our very wet European climate at the moment. Buy yourself a nice houseplant?

Beautiful flower, it might just grow for me, it looks similar to an Iris, is it related?

Yes it is lovely. Mediterranean climate would suit it, perhaps dappled shade if it gets very hot where you are. Keep an eye on it – it can be a bit invasive in the right (or wrong?) conditions. And yes it is a member of the Iridaceae family.
